Topsail Presbyterian Church Committee Responsibilities Overview

Chairpersons: Nancy Simon

  • Recommend the over-all policies of Topsail’s educational ministry in regard to activities of various groups, personnel, curriculum, etc.
  • Select the curriculum materials for use in the church school subject to Session approval.
  • Recruit and recommend teachers/leaders for the educational ministry for Session approval. All staff personnel shall be reviewed by the Session each year and approved for the following year.
  • Oversee the Nursery provided during Sunday School and worship and arrange for a Nursery Coordinator to provide direct oversight. Nursery care during other events is the responsibility of the sponsoring entity.
  • Oversee the Children's Church and arrange for a Coordinator to provide direct oversight.
  • As needed, provide Communion Training for families of young children to help both parents and children understand the meaning and significance of the Christian celebration of the Lord's Supper.
  • Oversee the Youth ministry of Topsail Presbyterian Church and select leadership subject to Session approval.
  • Be responsible for the annual Vacation Bible School, select curriculum and recruit a director for the program.
  • In conjunction with the pastor, arrange for periodic Confirmation classes to encourage young people to become active members of the church.
  • Arrange for Safe Sanctuary training for staff and volunteers to insure the protection of children, youth and adults from inappropriate conduct as well as false allegations of abuse.
  • Oversee the church library.
  • Hear reports of the church school teachers with regard to the condition of the school and convey these, together with a report of the committee's own actions and recommendations, to the Session.
  • Check facilities and equipment to continually work toward providing better facilities for educational ministry.
  • Regularly evaluate the educational ministry of the church with an eye to the strengthening and improvement of the present work in the light of congregational needs and the best educational goals, methods, and materials.
  • Offer occasional workshops/classes/seminars that might be of special interest to constituencies within the congregation and surrounding community (parenting, marriage, divorce, etc.).
  • Promote priorities of the wider church (Presbytery, Synod, General Assembly) as they relate to Christian Education.
  • Be responsible for recognizing and appreciating teachers and staff involved in the educational ministry of the congregation.
  • Develop an annual budget for submission to the Stewardship Committee to include the work of the Committee as well as recommendations concerning funding for various programs of enhancing the educational ministry of the congregation.
  • Make recommendations to the Session concerning revisions of the committee's areas of responsibility to be reflected as standard operating procedure in the church manual.
