Topsail Presbyterian Church
2011 Holiday Mission Projects
This year our holiday mission season began with Thaddeus, the Thanksgiving Turkey, asking the entire congregation to “pluck a feather” and “help a family” by providing some traditional grocery items for a Thanksgiving meal. The congregation members plucked so many feathers that we had enough for 36 families to be served. An announcement was also in the bulletin informing congregation members that could not shop, but wanted to participate, an opportunity to give a monetary donation to the Shepherd’s Box. This would purchase a turkey to be given to each family along with the groceries. The items were distributed to our assigned families the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. All of the recipients were grateful for the generosity of the church.
Our Christmas mission was based on using the same families assigned to us during the Thanksgiving season but focusing on gifts for the children. An angel tree was decorated with the first names of the children within all the families that TPC was given.
Our congregation was asked to participate by selecting an angel and purchasing gifts for that particular angel. The gifts were returned to the church where they were sorted and distributed to the families on Thursday before Christmas. TPC congregation members were extremely generous to all of the families. The Shepherd’s Box received monetary contributions all during the holiday season and some of the angels were provided for by using the money given to the Shepherd’s Box. The CHAPS organization provided the grocery items and turkeys or hams for this emphasis.
The names of families to be given assistance this holiday season were taken from the CHAPS program. The congregation at TPC assisted 25 families and 52 angel children within those families. In addition to gifts and toys, each family was given a Bible for their home inscribed from Topsail Presbyterian Church. All of the food not given away at Thanksgiving or Christmas was taken to the Four C’s for distribution.
The missions committee is grateful for all the participation of the congregation and volunteers that helped with this mission.
